Schedule a fix SSVC: Attend

A flaw in the way some older Windows browsers handle web page scripts could let a criminal take over a computer simply by getting the user to visit a harmful website.

What it actually does

The scripting engine in ChakraCore and Microsoft Edge fails to properly validate objects in memory, enabling out-of-bounds reads/writes that corrupt memory layout and allow arbitrary code execution in the browser process context.

Why it matters to the business

Attackers can gain full control of a user's workstation or server by tricking them into visiting a malicious website, leading to data theft, ransomware deployment, or lateral movement inside the organization; the vulnerability remains relevant in legacy Windows 10 and Server 2016 environments that have not received cumulative updates.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker crafts a malicious web page containing specially formed JavaScript that triggers the memory corruption in the Chakra scripting engine; when the victim loads the page in Edge, the engine's mishandling of objects allows the attacker to achieve arbitrary read/write primitives, bypass ASLR/DEP, and execute shellcode that downloads and runs a payload.

How to fix it

Apply the latest cumulative security updates for Microsoft Edge, ChakraCore, Windows 10, and Windows Server 2016; disable Edge where feasible on legacy systems and migrate to a supported browser; enable Windows Defender Application Guard or equivalent browser isolation for high-risk users.

How to confirm the fix worked

Verify that installed Edge and ChakraCore versions match or exceed the fixed builds listed in the corresponding Microsoft Security Update Guide bulletins; confirm that the vulnerable scripting engine DLLs are replaced and test that the PoC no longer crashes or executes code.

Typical attack path

  1. Attacker hosts a malicious webpage exploiting the Chakra memory corruption
  2. Victim is lured to the page via phishing or compromised site
  3. Edge/Chakra processes the crafted JavaScript and triggers the vulnerability
  4. Attacker gains arbitrary code execution inside the browser sandbox or renderer
  5. Payload escalates privileges or installs persistent malware

How to detect it

Search Windows Event Logs and Edge/Chakra crash dumps for scripting engine memory corruption exceptions; monitor for unexpected child processes spawned from MicrosoftEdge.exe or chakra.dll; review web proxy logs for visits to domains known to host exploits targeting this class of Chakra flaws.

What your security team should do

  • Immediately inventory all Windows 10 and Server 2016 systems still running Edge and prioritize patching within 30 days
  • Block legacy Edge usage via Group Policy and enforce migration to a supported browser
  • Enable enhanced logging for Edge/Chakra crashes and script engine exceptions in SIEM
  • Review and tighten browser sandbox and application control policies

The record
