What it actually does

Stack-based buffer over-read in GfxImageColorMap::getGray triggered by missing color-map validation when processing image data in crafted PDF files, resulting in application crash.

Why it matters to the business

Disruption of PDF viewing and processing workflows, potential loss of unsaved work, and reduced availability of document-handling services across desktop and server environments.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker creates a PDF containing an image with invalid color-map metadata, then delivers the file through common channels; when the document is opened in an affected Poppler-based application the missing validation causes an immediate crash.

How to fix it

Upgrade Poppler to a release containing the color-map validation fixes; apply current distribution packages for Debian and other affected systems; rebuild any locally compiled applications against the patched library.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the installed Poppler version is newer than 0.54.0, then attempt to open the original proof-of-concept PDF to verify the application no longer crashes.

Typical attack path

  1. Generate PDF with malformed color-map structures
  2. Distribute file via email, web download, or shared storage
  3. Victim opens the document in a vulnerable viewer or converter
  4. Application encounters unvalidated image data and crashes

How to detect it

Review system and application logs for segmentation faults or crashes occurring immediately after PDF file access; correlate with file-access events involving PDF documents.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize Poppler updates on all systems that render or convert PDFs
  • Restrict PDF processing to sandboxed or isolated environments where feasible
  • Add crash monitoring for PDF-handling processes to detect anomalous terminations

The record

The function GfxImageColorMap::getGray in GfxState.cc in Poppler 0.54.0 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (stack-based buffer over-read and application crash) via a crafted PDF document, related to missing color-map validation in ImageOutputDev.cc.
