CVE-2017-9461

What it actually does

smbd enters an infinite loop in fd_open_atomic when processing dangling symlinks, causing sustained high CPU usage and memory consumption leading to denial of service.

Why it matters to the business

File and print services become unavailable or severely degraded, consuming excessive compute resources and potentially disrupting dependent applications and users until the affected process is restarted or the system is rebooted.

How an attack unfolds

An authenticated remote attacker crafts requests that cause smbd to encounter dangling symlinks, triggering the infinite loop in fd_open_atomic and exhausting CPU and memory on the server.

How to fix it

Upgrade gke-gcloud-auth-plugin (Chainguard) and gke-gcloud-auth-plugin (Wolfi) to version 0.0.2-r9 or later; for underlying Samba deployments ensure versions 4.4.10 or 4.5.6 and newer are installed.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the running smbd binary or package version meets or exceeds the fixed releases; monitor CPU and memory usage of smbd processes under symlink-heavy workloads to verify the loop condition is no longer triggered.

Typical attack path

1. Authenticate to the Samba service with valid low-privileged credentials.
2. Send a sequence of SMB operations that reference or create dangling symbolic links.
3. Trigger repeated invocations of fd_open_atomic, inducing the infinite loop.
4. Observe sustained high CPU and memory growth leading to service degradation or crash.

Monitor smbd process CPU and memory metrics for sustained spikes; inspect Samba logs for repeated operations involving symbolic links from authenticated sessions; correlate with authentication events to identify potential abuse patterns.
