What it actually does
Memory corruption flaw in the browser's object handling allows an attacker to overwrite memory structures and execute arbitrary code within the current user's process context.
Why it matters to the business
Successful exploitation can lead to full compromise of a user's workstation, enabling theft of credentials, installation of persistent malware, and lateral movement; the high EPSS score and public exploit availability increase risk for any remaining unpatched systems even years after disclosure.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker hosts a malicious webpage that triggers the memory corruption when rendered by an unpatched Edge browser; the flaw allows the attacker to corrupt memory objects, gain control of execution flow, and run arbitrary code without needing additional user privileges beyond visiting the page.
How to fix it
Apply the security updates released by Microsoft for Edge and Windows 10 version 1703; remove or disable Edge where feasible and migrate users to a supported browser; enforce application allow-listing to limit execution of untrusted code.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify that the latest cumulative security update for the affected Windows 10 build is installed on all endpoints; confirm Edge version numbers match or exceed the fixed releases listed in the Microsoft Security Update Guide; scan for any remaining systems still reporting the vulnerable build.
Typical attack path
- Attacker crafts and hosts a malicious HTML page exploiting the memory corruption
- Victim is tricked into visiting the page with an affected Edge browser
- Browser processes the page and triggers the vulnerability during object access
- Attacker gains arbitrary code execution in the user's context
- Attacker performs post-exploitation actions such as credential theft or malware deployment
How to detect it
Review web proxy and browser history logs for visits to domains known to host exploits targeting Edge memory corruption; examine endpoint process creation and memory dumps for anomalous Edge child processes or injected code following web browsing sessions; correlate with EDR alerts for suspicious Edge behavior around the 2017 timeframe if historical logs exist.
What your security team should do
- Immediately inventory all systems still running the affected Windows 10 1703 and Edge builds
- Prioritize patching or decommissioning these legacy systems given the public exploit and moderate EPSS
- Block known malicious domains associated with historical exploits of this family via web proxy rules
- Enable Windows Defender Application Guard or equivalent browser isolation for high-risk users
The record
Microsoft Edge in Microsoft Windows 1703 allows an attacker to execute arbitrary code in the context of the current user, due to the way that Microsoft Edge accesses objects in memory, aka "Microsoft Edge Memory Corruption Vulnerability". This CVE ID is unique from CVE-2017-8731, CVE-2017-8734, and CVE-2017-11766.
