What it actually does

Buffer over-read in calc_output_single within src_sinc.c of libsamplerate < 0.1.9 when processing a crafted audio file, resulting in application crash (denial of service).

Why it matters to the business

Applications and services that depend on vulnerable libsamplerate (including 61 downstream packages) may experience unexpected crashes during audio file handling, leading to service disruption; the issue has been publicly known for years with stable low exploitation probability and no ransomware usage.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker crafts a malicious audio file that triggers the buffer over-read when processed by any application linking against the vulnerable library version; no named threat actors or campaigns are associated with exploitation of this flaw.

How to fix it

Upgrade libsamplerate to version 0.1.9 or newer; for the affected mongodb (Bitnami) package, upgrade to version 5.0.2 or later.

How to confirm the fix worked

Verify the installed libsamplerate version is 0.1.9 or newer; test audio processing paths with known-good files after the upgrade to confirm stability.

Typical attack path

  1. Obtain or generate a crafted audio file designed to trigger the over-read in calc_output_single
  2. Cause the target application to process the file through libsamplerate
  3. Induce a crash that results in denial of service

How to detect it

Review application and system logs for crashes or segmentation faults occurring during audio file processing; correlate with timestamps of file ingestion in services that use libsamplerate.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize upgrade of all instances of affected packages to the stated fixed versions
  • Scan dependency trees for any remaining copies of libsamplerate < 0.1.9
  • Monitor application logs for unexpected crashes during audio file handling until remediation is complete

The record

In libsamplerate before 0.1.9, a buffer over-read occurs in the calc_output_single function in src_sinc.c via a crafted audio file.
