What it actually does
Crafted image input triggers undefined behavior via an out-of-range unsigned char value in image decoding routines, resulting in application crash or potential memory corruption.
Why it matters to the business
Service disruption from crashes when processing untrusted images; low but non-zero exploitation likelihood on affected systems requires upgrade to avoid operational downtime.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker crafts a malicious image file and delivers it to a target application using the vulnerable image processing code; when the image is decoded, the undefined behavior is triggered leading to denial of service or further impact.
How to fix it
Upgrade libgit2-1.5 and libgit2-dev-1.5 packages to version 1.7.2-r0 or later; rebuild and redeploy dependent applications after update.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify package versions report 1.7.2-r0 or newer; test image processing with known-bad samples to confirm absence of crash; monitor for updated dependency trees in builds.
Typical attack path
- Identify target application accepting image uploads or processing external images
- Generate specially crafted image exploiting the unsigned char range issue
- Deliver image via network, file share, or application input
- Trigger decoding path to induce crash or undefined behavior
How to detect it
Review application logs for sudden crashes during image decoding; inspect process core dumps or stack traces referencing rle.c or image coders; correlate with inbound image file uploads around crash timestamps.
What your security team should do
- Immediately schedule upgrade of libgit2 packages to 1.7.2-r0 across all environments
- Prioritize scanning CI/CD pipelines and container images for the vulnerable versions
- Add image-processing fuzzing to regression test suites post-upgrade
The record
coders/rle.c in ImageMagick 7.0.5-4 has an "outside the range of representable values of type unsigned char" undefined behavior issue, which might allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) or possibly have unspecified other impact via a crafted image.
