What it actually does

Buffer overflow in the XML import command allows arbitrary code execution when processing a classify element with an excessively long name attribute.

Why it matters to the business

Attackers can gain full control of affected systems, leading to data theft, ransomware deployment, or persistent access; high exploit availability increases urgency for organizations still running legacy versions of these disk management tools.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker crafts a malicious XML file containing a classify element with an oversized name attribute, then tricks a user into importing the file via the vulnerable product's import command, triggering the overflow and executing attacker-supplied code.

How to fix it

Upgrade SyncBreeze, DiskSorter, DiskPulse, DiskSavvy, DupScout, and VX Search to version 10.6 or later and DiskBoss to version 8.9 or later; disable XML import functionality if upgrades are not immediately possible.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm product versions meet or exceed the fixed releases listed above; test import of a benign XML file and monitor process behavior for crashes or unexpected execution.

Typical attack path

  1. Craft malicious XML with long classify name attribute
  2. Deliver file to target via email, download, or shared storage
  3. Induce user to trigger import command in affected product
  4. Overflow occurs and shellcode executes
  5. Attacker establishes foothold or escalates privileges

How to detect it

Search application logs and file import histories for XML files containing classify elements; inspect process crash dumps or memory artifacts around import operations for signs of overflow; review endpoint telemetry for unexpected code execution following XML imports.

  • classify name=" followed by hundreds of characters
  • SyncBreeze.exe, DiskSorter.exe, DiskBoss.exe, DiskPulse.exe, DiskSavvy.exe, DupScout.exe, VXSearch.exe importing XML
  • buffer overflow crash signatures in Flexense import threads

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize patching all listed Flexense products to the fixed versions
  • Block or monitor inbound XML files with classify elements in email and file shares
  • Hunt for historical exploitation using weaponized exploit artifacts since 2017
  • Remove or restrict local use of unpatched legacy installations

The record

A buffer overflow vulnerability in Import Command in SyncBreeze before 10.6, DiskSorter before 10.6, DiskBoss before 8.9, DiskPulse before 10.6, DiskSavvy before 10.6, DupScout before 10.6, and VX Search before 10.6 allows attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted XML file containing a long name attribute of a classify element.
