What it actually does

Heap-based buffer overflow in MSADPCM::initializeCoefficients triggered by malformed ADPCM audio data allows memory corruption.

Why it matters to the business

Potential application crashes, arbitrary code execution, or data compromise when processing untrusted audio files; the affected library remains in legacy or embedded audio workflows despite the age of the issue.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker crafts a malicious audio file containing specially malformed MS ADPCM coefficients, then causes a vulnerable application to open or process the file locally, overflowing the heap buffer and achieving memory corruption that may lead to code execution.

How to fix it

Upgrade audiofile to a version containing the fix; for tigera-operator-1.28 (Chainguard) specifically update to 1.28.15-r5 or later. Remove or isolate any remaining 0.3.6 installations and rebuild dependent packages.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm installed audiofile version is newer than 0.3.6, run regression tests with known-good and malformed ADPCM files, and verify no heap overflow occurs under sanitizer instrumentation.

Typical attack path

  1. Craft malicious ADPCM audio file with oversized or invalid coefficient data
  2. Deliver file via email, download, or removable media
  3. Trick user or automated process into opening the file with an affected application
  4. Trigger buffer overflow during coefficient initialization
  5. Leverage corruption for code execution or denial of service

How to detect it

Review application or system logs for crashes or segmentation faults while processing audio files; inspect process core dumps or sanitizer reports for heap buffer overflows involving MSADPCM initialization; correlate file open events with unusual memory behavior.

What your security team should do

  • Apply the listed fixed version immediately on all systems using tigera-operator-1.28
  • Scan build pipelines and containers for any remaining audiofile 0.3.6 dependencies
  • Add audio file parsing to the list of untrusted input sources requiring strict validation
  • Monitor EPSS and exploit maturity; re-evaluate if new public exploits appear

The record

Heap-based buffer overflow in the MSADPCM::initializeCoefficients function in MSADPCM.cpp in audiofile (aka libaudiofile and Audio File Library) 0.3.6 allows remote attackers to have unspecified impact via a crafted audio file.
