What it actually does

The vulnerability in the saned daemon permits remote attackers to extract sensitive information from process memory by sending specially crafted SANE_NET_CONTROL_OPTION network packets.

Why it matters to the business

Attackers may access confidential data stored in memory of affected deployments, raising the risk of data exposure and compliance violations in containerized environments using the impacted package.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker locates an exposed saned service, crafts a malicious SANE_NET_CONTROL_OPTION packet, transmits it over the network, and receives leaked memory contents in the response without authentication.

How to fix it

Update the affected package to the fixed version 1.19.9-r0 or later and restart affected services.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the installed package version is at or above the fixed release and verify that crafted control packets no longer return memory contents.

Typical attack path

  1. Identify exposed saned services via network scanning
  2. Craft and transmit a malicious SANE_NET_CONTROL_OPTION packet
  3. Receive and parse the sensitive memory information returned by the service

How to detect it

Inspect network traffic and service logs for anomalous SANE protocol packets containing unexpected control option requests.

What your security team should do

  • Apply the available package update immediately
  • Restrict network exposure of the saned service to trusted hosts only
  • Review and harden any container images that include the vulnerable component

The record
