What it actually does
Remote authenticated users can inject and execute arbitrary OS commands via unsanitized shell metacharacters supplied in the ping_IPAddr field of HTTP POST requests to ping.cgi.
Why it matters to the business
Compromised devices grant attackers full remote control, enabling network disruption, data theft, or use as attack infrastructure; the vulnerability's presence on the KEV list with a 2022 remediation deadline signals high urgency for replacement given the device's age and lack of fixes.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with valid credentials authenticates to the web interface, crafts a POST request to ping.cgi embedding shell metacharacters in the ping_IPAddr parameter, and causes the device to execute attacker-supplied operating system commands, as observed in active exploitation campaigns targeting this NETGEAR DGN2200 Remote Code Execution Vulnerability.
How to fix it
No fixed firmware versions are available; immediately replace affected DGN2200 units with supported hardware and disable remote management or the ping feature where possible until replacement occurs.
How to confirm the fix worked
Inspect current firmware version against the vulnerable threshold of 10.0.0.50, review web server access logs for anomalous POSTs to ping.cgi, and test parameter handling with safe metacharacter probes in a lab environment.
Typical attack path
- Obtain valid credentials for the device web interface
- Send crafted HTTP POST to /ping.cgi containing shell metacharacters in ping_IPAddr
- Trigger command execution on the underlying OS
- Establish persistence, exfiltrate data, or pivot within the network
How to detect it
Search web server and device logs for POST requests targeting ping.cgi that contain unusual characters or command patterns in the ping_IPAddr field; examine process lists and outbound connections for unexpected activity originating from the router.
- POST /ping.cgi
- ping_IPAddr=
- ;
- |
- `
What your security team should do
- Prioritize hardware replacement for all affected devices before any other action
- Block external access to device management interfaces via firewall rules
- Enable logging of all HTTP requests to ping.cgi and monitor for metacharacter patterns
- Segment vulnerable devices onto isolated network segments
The record
ping.cgi on NETGEAR DGN2200 devices with firmware through 10.0.0.50 allows remote authenticated users to execute arbitrary OS commands via shell metacharacters in the ping_IPAddr field of an HTTP POST request.
