What it actually does

Improper input validation allows unauthenticated remote attackers to supply crafted payloads that bypass sanitization and execute arbitrary commands with the privileges of the iMC process.

Why it matters to the business

Complete takeover of the network management platform can expose configuration data, disrupt monitoring and orchestration, and provide a foothold for broader infrastructure compromise; the high exploit maturity and unchanged high EPSS after more than eight years indicate persistent risk to any remaining deployments.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker locates an exposed iMC instance, crafts a malicious request that exploits the input-validation flaw, and achieves remote code execution, after which the attacker can install tools, move laterally, or exfiltrate data; public weaponized exploits lower the barrier for opportunistic and targeted actors.

How to fix it

Upgrade HPE Intelligent Management Center PLAT to a version that resolves the input-validation issue; if no upgrade path exists, isolate the system from untrusted networks and replace it with a supported management platform.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the installed build is newer than 7.3 E0504P04, review vendor release notes for the specific fix, and perform authenticated or unauthenticated connectivity tests that previously triggered the flaw to verify the vulnerability is closed.

Typical attack path

  1. Scan for reachable HPE iMC instances on default management ports
  2. Send specially crafted HTTP/HTTPS requests containing malicious payloads
  3. Trigger code execution to obtain a shell or service account
  4. Establish persistence and perform post-exploitation actions such as credential harvesting or lateral movement

How to detect it

Review web-server and application logs for anomalous POST or GET requests with unusual parameters around the time of suspected compromise; look for unexpected child processes spawned by the iMC service and outbound connections from the management host.

What your security team should do

  • Immediately inventory all HPE iMC deployments and prioritize removal or replacement of version 7.3 E0504P04
  • Block external access to iMC management interfaces via firewall or network segmentation
  • Monitor for any remaining instances given the eight-year-old weaponized exploit status
