What it actually does
The error state mechanism fails to persist across direct SSL_read()/SSL_write() calls after a fatal handshake error, allowing subsequent operations to return success and pass record-layer data without encryption or decryption.
Why it matters to the business
Organizations running affected OpenSSL versions risk exposure of sensitive data in transit, increasing the chance of breaches and compliance violations; high EPSS score indicates elevated exploitation likelihood despite the CVE's age.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker initiates a TLS handshake that triggers a fatal error, then relies on an application flaw that issues SSL_read() or SSL_write() on the same session afterward; the call succeeds and the attacker obtains or injects plaintext data from the record layer.
How to fix it
Upgrade all instances of OpenSSL 1.0.2b through 1.0.2m to version 1.0.2n or newer; rebuild and redeploy dependent applications and restart services; apply vendor patches for Debian and other distributions.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify installed OpenSSL version is 1.0.2n or later; review application source for direct use of SSL_read()/SSL_write() after handshake functions; test error-state behavior with crafted fatal handshake sequences.
Typical attack path
- Initiate TLS connection to trigger a fatal handshake error
- Exploit application logic that continues calling SSL_read()/SSL_write() after the error
- Observe or manipulate unencrypted record-layer data
How to detect it
Review TLS handshake logs for fatal errors followed immediately by successful read or write operations on the same session; inspect application logs for unexpected plaintext data after handshake failures.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize upgrade of all OpenSSL 1.0.2 installations to 1.0.2n within the next maintenance window
- Scan codebases for direct SSL_read()/SSL_write() usage after handshake calls
- Monitor EPSS trend and reassess risk if exploit maturity increases
The record
OpenSSL 1.0.2 (starting from version 1.0.2b) introduced an "error state" mechanism. The intent was that if a fatal error occurred during a handshake then OpenSSL would move into the error state and would immediately fail if you attempted to continue the handshake. This works as designed for the explicit handshake functions (SSL_do_handshake(), SSL_accept() and SSL_connect()), however due to a bug it does not work correctly if SSL_read() or SSL_write() is called directly. In that scenario, if the handshake fails then a fatal error will be returned in the initial function call. If SSL_read()/SSL_write() is subsequently called by the application for the same SSL object then it will succeed and the data is passed without being decrypted/encrypted directly from the SSL/TLS record layer. In order to exploit this issue an application bug would have to be present that resulted in a call to SSL_read()/SSL_write() being issued after having already received a fatal error. OpenSSL version 1.0.2b-1.0.2m are affected. Fixed in OpenSSL 1.0.2n. OpenSSL 1.1.0 is not affected.
