What it actually does

The Mem_File_Reader::read_avail function fails to validate that a supplied size value is non-negative, allowing an attacker-controlled file to trigger an invalid memory access that crashes the process.

Why it matters to the business

Container networking components built on the affected library can be terminated when processing a malicious file, causing brief loss of network connectivity for workloads that rely on the impacted CNI plugins.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker supplies a specially crafted music or data file to any application that uses the vulnerable Game_Music_Emu library; the library reads an unchecked negative size value and dereferences invalid memory, resulting in an immediate crash.

How to fix it

Upgrade every listed Chainguard package to the fixed version 1.5.0-r1 or later; rebuild and redeploy any container images that embed the vulnerable library.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the running binary or container image reports package version 1.5.0-r1 or newer; re-execute any unit tests that exercise file parsing with both valid and malformed inputs.

Typical attack path

  1. Identify a service or plugin that links against the vulnerable library version.
  2. Deliver a crafted file through normal input channels accepted by that service.
  3. Trigger the read_avail code path with the malicious size field.
  4. Observe process termination and resulting denial of service.

How to detect it

Review application and system logs for unexpected process exits immediately after file-open operations; correlate crashes with file names or network transfers that occurred moments earlier.

What your security team should do

  • Apply the 1.5.0-r1 updates to all affected Chainguard CNI packages within the next maintenance window.
  • Scan container registries and build pipelines for any remaining references to versions prior to 1.5.0-r1.
  • Add the library to dependency-monitoring policies so future updates are applied automatically.

The record

The Mem_File_Reader::read_avail function in Data_Reader.cpp in the Game_Music_Emu library (aka game-music-emu) 0.6.1 does not ensure a non-negative size, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted file.
