What it actually does
Path traversal in file-based attachment plugins permits an authenticated user to read arbitrary host filesystem files (including configuration) via crafted _task=settings&_action=upload-display&_from=timezone requests.
Why it matters to the business
Attackers with valid credentials can exfiltrate mail server configuration and sensitive data, enabling further compromise; the flaw was exploited in the wild, listed in CISA KEV with a 2022 remediation deadline, and carries elevated EPSS that rose 24% in the last 30 days.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker first authenticates with a valid account to obtain an active session, then issues a specially crafted settings upload-display request that abuses the timezone parameter and attachment plugin logic to traverse the filesystem and retrieve arbitrary files; the technique was observed in active exploitation campaigns against Roundcube Webmail.
How to fix it
Upgrade Roundcube Webmail to version 1.1.10, 1.2.7, or 1.3.3 or later; disable or remove file-based attachment plugins if immediate patching is not feasible; apply vendor security updates to all Debian and other affected distributions.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify installed version is at or above the fixed releases; attempt the vulnerable request pattern in a test environment and confirm that filesystem traversal is rejected; review release notes for the specific path-traversal fix.
Typical attack path
- Obtain valid Roundcube credentials and establish an authenticated session
- Craft HTTP request targeting _task=settings&_action=upload-display&_from=timezone with path traversal payload
- Read sensitive host files such as configuration or credential stores
- Use obtained data to escalate access or pivot within the environment
How to detect it
Search web server and Roundcube access logs for requests containing the strings _task=settings, _action=upload-display, and _from=timezone together with path traversal sequences; correlate with successful responses returning file contents; review authentication logs for sessions that precede such requests.
- _task=settings&_action=upload-display&_from=timezone
- upload-display&from=timezone
- ../config.inc.php
- /etc/passwd
- roundcube.*upload-display
What your security team should do
- Prioritize patching all Roundcube instances because of KEV status and confirmed in-the-wild exploitation
- Harden authentication and monitor for anomalous authenticated requests to settings endpoints
- Remove or restrict unnecessary attachment plugins that handle local file operations
- Audit logs for historical exploitation attempts given the 2017 disclosure and 2022 KEV deadline
The record
Roundcube Webmail before 1.1.10, 1.2.x before 1.2.7, and 1.3.x before 1.3.3 allows unauthorized access to arbitrary files on the host's filesystem, including configuration files, as exploited in the wild in November 2017. The attacker must be able to authenticate at the target system with a valid username/password as the attack requires an active session. The issue is related to file-based attachment plugins and _task=settings&_action=upload-display&_from=timezone requests.
