What it actually does

The flaw triggers an illegal memory address access inside _lou_getALine during translation-table compilation, resulting in memory corruption that can be leveraged for crashes or arbitrary code execution.

Why it matters to the business

Successful exploitation can allow remote attackers to take control of Consul instances or cause service outages, increasing operational risk and potential data exposure in environments that depend on the affected packages.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker supplies a crafted translation table to the vulnerable Liblouis component used by Consul; when the table is compiled the illegal address access occurs, allowing memory corruption that leads to code execution or denial of service.

How to fix it

Upgrade all listed Consul packages (consul-1.15, consul-1.15-oci-entrypoint, consul-1.15-oci-entrypoint-compat and their Wolfi/Chainguard variants) to version 1.15.11-r5 or newer.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm installed package versions match or exceed the fixed releases, then run regression tests that exercise translation-table compilation paths.

Typical attack path

  1. Identify a Consul deployment that pulls in the vulnerable Liblouis dependency
  2. Craft a malicious translation table that triggers the out-of-bounds access
  3. Deliver the table through an input path accepted by Consul
  4. Trigger table compilation to corrupt memory and achieve code execution or crash

How to detect it

Look in application and system logs for unexpected crashes or segmentation faults during table compilation; correlate with process restarts or memory-related error messages.

What your security team should do

  • Apply the 1.15.11-r5 updates immediately on all affected Consul deployments
  • Scan container images and package manifests for older Liblouis versions
  • Monitor upstream Chainguard and Wolfi advisories for any follow-on fixes

The record

There is an illegal address access in the _lou_getALine function in compileTranslationTable.c:346 in Liblouis 3.2.0.
