What it actually does
An authenticated local attacker with access to an X server using the shared memory extension can trigger server aborts or overwrite shared memory segments belonging to other clients in the same session.
Why it matters to the business
Disrupts graphical sessions through denial of service and risks tampering with display data in multi-user environments; the vulnerability affects packages with 98 downstream dependents, potentially impacting dependent applications such as tensorflow (Bitnami).
How an attack unfolds
A local attacker authenticates to an X server, leverages the shared memory extension to issue crafted requests, and either forces an X server abort or replaces memory segments of other clients.
How to fix it
Upgrade X.Org Server to version 1.19.4 or later; for tensorflow (Bitnami) upgrade to version 2.1.4. If immediate patching is not possible, disable the shared memory extension via server configuration.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify the installed X server version is at least 1.19.4 and confirm the shared memory extension is disabled or no longer accepts the vulnerable requests; retest affected tensorflow (Bitnami) deployments after the 2.1.4 update.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local authenticated access to the system
- Connect to the running X server
- Interact with the shared memory extension
- Send malicious requests to abort the server or replace client memory segments
How to detect it
Review X server logs for unexpected aborts or crashes, monitor for unusual shared-memory attachment or detachment events, and inspect process activity involving the X server after the 2017 publication date.
What your security team should do
- Apply the fixed versions (X.Org Server 1.19.4+, tensorflow (Bitnami) 2.1.4) across all affected systems
- Disable the X shared memory extension where feasible
- Audit logs for X server crashes or anomalous shared-memory activity
- Prioritize remediation on systems with high user density or dependent graphical workloads
The record
In X.Org Server (aka xserver and xorg-server) before 1.19.4, an attacker authenticated to an X server with the X shared memory extension enabled can cause aborts of the X server or replace shared memory segments of other X clients in the same session.
