What it actually does

The flaw permits remote attackers to inject arbitrary operating system commands via unsanitized RSS item titles or URLs that are processed by the bookmarking function, resulting in code execution under the privileges of the Newsbeuter process.

Why it matters to the business

Compromise of user workstations occurs when victims interact with malicious feeds, enabling data theft, persistence, or lateral movement; the presence of 98 downstream dependents amplifies potential supply-chain exposure across affected deployments.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker publishes an RSS feed containing shell metacharacters inside an item title or URL; when a user subscribes and triggers the bookmarking function, the unsanitized input is passed to a system shell, executing the attacker-supplied commands.

How to fix it

Upgrade tensorflow (Bitnami) to version 2.1.4 or later; disable bookmarking of untrusted feeds and apply least-privilege execution contexts until patches are applied.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the installed version matches or exceeds the fixed release; review package manifests and changelogs for the neutralization fix; test with a benign RSS item containing shell metacharacters to verify no execution occurs.

Typical attack path

  1. Attacker creates RSS feed embedding shell commands in title or URL fields
  2. Victim adds the feed to Newsbeuter and invokes the bookmark function
  3. Unsanitized input reaches an OS command invocation
  4. Attacker commands execute on the victim host

How to detect it

Inspect process creation logs and command-line audit trails for the reader binary spawning unexpected shells or interpreters; correlate RSS fetch events with subsequent command execution timestamps.

What your security team should do

  • Immediately inventory all instances of the affected package and schedule upgrades to the stated fixed version
  • Block or sandbox RSS ingestion from untrusted sources
  • Monitor for post-exploitation artifacts such as unexpected child processes spawned by the reader binary

The record

Improper Neutralization of Special Elements used in an OS Command in bookmarking function of Newsbeuter versions 0.7 through 2.9 allows remote attackers to perform user-assisted code execution by crafting an RSS item that includes shell code in its title and/or URL.
