What it actually does

The deserialization flaw permits an unauthenticated remote attacker to supply a crafted object that, when processed by the IMC PLAT server, results in arbitrary code execution with the privileges of the application process.

Why it matters to the business

An attacker can seize complete control of the network-management platform, enabling theft or alteration of configuration data, disruption of managed devices, and potential lateral movement across the enterprise network.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker locates an exposed IMC PLAT instance, crafts a malicious serialized Java object containing a payload, and transmits it over the network to a vulnerable deserialization entry point; upon untrusted object reconstruction the payload executes, granting a remote shell or further commands.

How to fix it

Upgrade HPE intelligent Management Center PLAT to a version later than IMC Plat 7.3 E0504P2; apply all vendor security patches and restrict network access to the management console until the update is complete.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the installed build string is newer than E0504P2, re-test the affected deserialization endpoints with a safe probe, and verify that the management service no longer processes untrusted serialized objects.

Typical attack path

  1. Scan for reachable IMC PLAT instances on default ports
  2. Identify the vulnerable version through banner or error responses
  3. Send a single HTTP or RMI request containing a weaponized serialized object
  4. Obtain code execution and establish persistence or pivot

How to detect it

Review web-server and application logs for unexpected deserialization errors or large serialized payloads arriving from external addresses; examine process-creation events on the IMC host for anomalous child processes spawned by the Java runtime.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize patching or decommissioning the affected IMC deployment within the next maintenance window
  • Place the management console behind a strict allow-list and VPN
  • Monitor for any post-exploitation activity on hosts that previously ran the vulnerable version

The record
