What it actually does

Heap-based buffer overflow in TNEFFillMapi allows crafted TNEF input to trigger memory corruption and denial of service.

Why it matters to the business

Processing of malicious email attachments can crash dependent services, causing operational disruption until the affected component is restarted or updated.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker creates a specially crafted TNEF file that overflows a heap buffer inside TNEFFillMapi, then delivers the file through email or file shares so that a victim application using the vulnerable ytnef library opens it and crashes.

How to fix it

Upgrade ytnef to a patched release; for fulcio-fips (Chainguard) update to version 1.4.3-r2 or later.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the installed ytnef version meets or exceeds the fixed release, then attempt to open a known-triggering test file in a controlled environment to verify absence of crash.

Typical attack path

  1. Craft a TNEF file that triggers the overflow in TNEFFillMapi
  2. Deliver the file to the target via email attachment or shared storage
  3. Victim application opens the file using the vulnerable library
  4. Heap corruption occurs, resulting in denial of service

How to detect it

Monitor application logs and crash reports for ytnef process terminations when handling TNEF files; inspect inbound email or file shares for files that reference TNEFFillMapi in stack traces.

  • TNEFFillMapi
  • ytnef.c

What your security team should do

  • Apply the listed fixed version immediately on all systems that parse TNEF content
  • Block or sandbox untrusted TNEF attachments until patching is complete
  • Add ytnef version checks to software inventory and vulnerability scanning

The record

In ytnef 1.9.2, a heap-based buffer overflow vulnerability was found in the function TNEFFillMapi in ytnef.c, which allows attackers to cause a denial of service via a crafted file.
