What it actually does
Floating point exception in Exiv2::ValueType triggered by crafted input causes process crash and remote denial of service.
Why it matters to the business
Application or service becomes unavailable until restarted, interrupting image-handling workflows; older unpatched deployments face prolonged exposure despite low current exploit probability.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker crafts a malformed image or metadata file and supplies it to any code path that invokes Exiv2 parsing; the floating-point exception halts the process, producing denial of service. Public exploit code has been available since 2017, though no named threat actors or ransomware campaigns are associated.
How to fix it
Upgrade the affected package to the fixed version aws-load-balancer-controller-2.4.5-r9 (Chainguard) or later; rebuild and redeploy containers to ensure the patched Exiv2 library is in use.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the running binary or container image reports the updated package version; test with known crashing inputs to verify the exception no longer occurs.
Typical attack path
- Identify a network-accessible service that processes untrusted images with Exiv2
- Prepare a specially crafted input file that triggers the ValueType floating-point exception
- Deliver the file via upload, API request, or other accepted input channel
- Observe process crash and service outage
How to detect it
Review application and container logs for sudden process terminations or floating-point exception signals during image parsing; correlate with inbound requests containing image uploads around the time of the crash.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize upgrade of all instances using the listed fixed version within normal change windows
- Add the affected package to vulnerability scanning policies to prevent regression
- Monitor EPSS and exploit availability; raise priority if EPSS rises
The record
There is a Floating point exception in the Exiv2::ValueType function in Exiv2 0.26 that will lead to a remote denial of service attack via crafted input.
