What it actually does

Authenticated shell metacharacter injection in the rootd daemon enables remote code execution by an attacker who supplies a crafted request that is passed unsafely to a system shell.

Why it matters to the business

Compromise of servers running older ROOT installations can lead to unauthorized execution of attacker-controlled commands, data exfiltration, or disruption of scientific computing workloads; the vulnerability is long-public and the product is widely used in research environments.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker obtains valid credentials for the rootd service, crafts a request containing shell metacharacters, and causes the daemon to execute arbitrary operating-system commands, achieving full remote code execution on the host.

How to fix it

Upgrade root-project/root to the commit 88ccff152604e0f1012653a596d802ff7ede3145 or later; if an upgrade is not immediately possible, restrict network access to rootd and enforce strong authentication.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the installed ROOT version is newer than 6.9.03 and that the binary or source tree contains commit 88ccff152604e0f1012653a596d802ff7ede3145; test that previously exploitable metacharacter sequences are now rejected or properly escaped.

Typical attack path

  1. Obtain valid authentication credentials for the rootd service
  2. Send a specially crafted request containing shell metacharacters to the rootd daemon
  3. Trigger command execution via the injected metacharacters
  4. Establish a shell or implant for further actions on the compromised host

How to detect it

Inspect rootd access logs for requests containing shell metacharacters such as backticks, semicolons, pipes, or dollar signs; correlate with process-creation events showing unexpected shell invocations originating from the rootd process.

What your security team should do

  • Immediately upgrade all instances of root-project/root to the fixed commit
  • Restrict network exposure of rootd services to trusted clients only
  • Review authentication mechanisms and logs for the rootd daemon
  • Monitor for any post-exploitation activity on hosts that previously ran vulnerable versions

The record

ROOT version 6.9.03 and below is vulnerable to an authenticated shell metacharacter injection in the rootd daemon resulting in remote code execution
