What it actually does
The flaw permits XML External Entity Expansion during parsing of crafted documents in xmlsec 1.2.23 and earlier, enabling unauthorized file or resource access and potential denial of service via resource exhaustion.
Why it matters to the business
Successful exploitation could result in leakage of sensitive internal data or temporary service disruption, though the age of the issue combined with low exploit probability and resolution in modern packages minimizes operational exposure across affected ecosystems.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker crafts an XML document containing malicious external entity declarations and supplies it to an application leveraging the vulnerable xmlsec library; the parser resolves the entities, disclosing local files or exhausting system resources.
How to fix it
Upgrade xmlsec to a version newer than 1.2.23. For listed Consul packages ensure deployment of the versions marked fixed in 0 to eliminate exposure.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm xmlsec library version exceeds 1.2.23, then test XML parsing behavior against known external-entity payloads to verify entity resolution is disabled or mitigated.
Typical attack path
- Locate an application endpoint or feature that accepts and processes XML input using xmlsec
- Prepare a malicious XML payload embedding external entity references targeting internal resources
- Submit the crafted document to trigger entity expansion
- Capture disclosed data or observe denial-of-service effects
How to detect it
Review application and library logs for XML parsing anomalies, unexpected file or network access attempts during document handling, and any error patterns consistent with entity expansion attempts.
What your security team should do
- Apply available updates to xmlsec and dependent packages without delay
- Audit XML processing code for external entity handling and apply parser hardening
- Remove or isolate any remaining legacy instances still using unpatched xmlsec
The record
xmlsec 1.2.23 and before is vulnerable to XML External Entity Expansion when parsing crafted input documents, resulting in possible information disclosure or denial of service
