What it actually does

Type confusion vulnerability in Layout::MultiColumnBoxBuilder::HandleColumnBreakOnColumnSpanningElement within mshtml.dll allows remote code execution through crafted CSS token sequences combined with JavaScript operating on TH elements.

Why it matters to the business

Attackers can achieve full remote code execution on affected browser instances, leading to system compromise, data theft, or deployment of additional malware; the issue remains actively exploited years after disclosure with a CISA remediation deadline that has long passed.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker crafts a malicious web page containing a specific CSS token sequence and JavaScript that manipulates a TH element to trigger the type confusion in the multi-column layout handler, resulting in arbitrary code execution within the browser process.

How to fix it

Apply the vendor-supplied security updates for affected Microsoft browsers; for listed Debian mediawiki packages upgrade to the fixed versions 1:1.27.1-1 on Debian 11/12/13.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm browser versions are updated beyond the vulnerable releases and verify that mediawiki packages match or exceed 1:1.27.1-1 on Debian systems; test rendering of multi-column layouts with TH elements in controlled environments.

Typical attack path

  1. Attacker hosts a malicious webpage with crafted CSS and JavaScript targeting TH elements
  2. Victim visits the page using vulnerable Internet Explorer 10/11 or Edge
  3. Type confusion is triggered in mshtml.dll during layout handling
  4. Arbitrary code executes in the browser context, enabling further actions such as credential theft or persistence

How to detect it

Review web proxy and browser process logs for access to suspicious domains combined with crashes or unexpected code execution in mshtml.dll; look for indicators of type confusion exploitation in memory dumps or event logs from 2017 onward given the active-in-the-wild status.

What your security team should do

  • Immediately upgrade all instances of Internet Explorer, Edge, and the listed mediawiki packages to the provided fixed versions
  • Block known malicious domains and monitor for unusual browser process behavior
  • Prioritize patching due to KEV listing and active exploitation in the wild

The record

Microsoft Internet Explorer 10 and 11 and Microsoft Edge have a type confusion issue in the Layout::MultiColumnBoxBuilder::HandleColumnBreakOnColumnSpanningElement function in mshtml.dll, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via vectors involving a crafted Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) token sequence and crafted JavaScript code that operates on a TH element.
