What it actually does

The vulnerability causes incorrect parsing of the authority component in URLs where the hostname ends with a question mark, allowing the application to connect to an unintended host instead of the specified one.

Why it matters to the business

Attackers can redirect connections to malicious servers, potentially leading to data integrity compromises in affected Roundcube installations across Debian and Ubuntu systems; while not in active exploitation campaigns, the widespread use of Roundcube increases exposure surface for organizations relying on these distributions.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker supplies a specially crafted URL ending the hostname with '?' to exploit the parsing flaw in Lynx used by Roundcube, causing connection to an attacker-controlled host and enabling integrity manipulation without authentication.

How to fix it

Upgrade Roundcube packages to the fixed versions provided: 1.1.3+dfsg.1-1 for Debian 11/12/13 and Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, or 1.3.6+dfsg.1-1 for Ubuntu 18.04 LTS; apply updates through standard package managers and restart affected services.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm installed Roundcube package versions match or exceed the listed fixed releases for each distribution using dpkg or apt commands, then test URL handling with crafted inputs ending in '?' to verify correct host resolution.

Typical attack path

  1. Locate a Roundcube deployment on a vulnerable Debian or Ubuntu release
  2. Craft a URL with hostname terminated by '?' pointing to an unintended destination
  3. Deliver the URL via email, web form, or configuration input processed by Roundcube
  4. Trigger Lynx URL handling to force connection to the attacker-specified host

How to detect it

Review Roundcube and Lynx process logs for URLs containing a hostname immediately followed by '?', unexpected outbound connection targets, or failed authority parsing events; correlate with mail or web traffic timestamps.

What your security team should do

  • Apply the specified Roundcube package upgrades immediately on all listed Debian and Ubuntu deployments
  • Audit outbound connection logs from Roundcube/Lynx processes for anomalous hosts
  • Restrict URL input sources where possible until patches are deployed

The record

lynx: It was found that Lynx doesn't parse the authority component of the URL correctly when the host name part ends with '?', and could instead be tricked into connecting to a different host.
