What it actually does
The tipc_msg_build function fails to enforce the relationship between minimum fragment length and maximum packet size, allowing a heap-based buffer overflow when processing TIPC messages under CAP_NET_ADMIN.
Why it matters to the business
Local attackers on unpatched Linux systems can obtain root privileges or crash the kernel, leading to unauthorized access, data compromise, or service disruption on servers and endpoints.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access and CAP_NET_ADMIN crafts a TIPC message that triggers the missing length validation in tipc_msg_build, overflowing a kernel heap buffer to either execute arbitrary code or induce a denial of service.
How to fix it
Upgrade the Linux kernel to a version after 4.8.11 that contains the TIPC message length validation fix; rebuild and reboot with the patched kernel image.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm kernel source contains the corrected bounds check in net/tipc/msg.c and verify running kernel version reports the patch; test with a non-privileged TIPC message that previously triggered overflow.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local shell and CAP_NET_ADMIN on target Linux host
- Prepare malformed TIPC fragment with invalid min/max length relationship
- Invoke tipc_msg_build via netlink or socket interface
- Trigger heap overflow to overwrite adjacent kernel structures
- Escalate to root or cause kernel panic
How to detect it
Review kernel logs for TIPC-related buffer overflow oops, unexpected heap allocations near net/tipc/msg.c, or processes using CAP_NET_ADMIN followed by privilege changes; correlate with audit logs of netlink socket activity.
What your security team should do
- Identify all systems running kernels through 4.8.11 and schedule immediate patching
- Restrict CAP_NET_ADMIN to only trusted processes and users
- Monitor for kernel oops or TIPC-related crashes as potential exploitation signs
- Apply compensating controls such as seccomp or LSM policies limiting netlink access
The record
The tipc_msg_build function in net/tipc/msg.c in the Linux kernel through 4.8.11 does not validate the relationship between the minimum fragment length and the maximum packet size, which allows local users to gain privileges or cause a denial of service (heap-based buffer overflow) by leveraging the CAP_NET_ADMIN capability.
