What it actually does
A local malicious application can read data outside its permitted sandbox by abusing flaws in kernel subsystems such as ION, Binder, USB, and networking; the vulnerability only becomes reachable after a privileged process has already been compromised.
Why it matters to the business
Attackers who first obtain elevated access can exfiltrate sensitive user or system data, increasing the cost of any successful kernel-level compromise and potentially exposing regulated information.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker first gains control of a privileged process through a separate vulnerability or misconfiguration, then leverages the kernel information-disclosure flaw to read memory or files that should be inaccessible, bypassing normal permission checks.
How to fix it
Apply the vendor kernel updates that address the information-disclosure issue in the ION, Binder, USB and networking subsystems; for the listed Ubuntu package, upgrade flashplugin-nonfree to version 11.2.202.577ubuntu0.14.04.1 or later.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the installed kernel or flashplugin-nonfree package version matches or exceeds the fixed release; review system logs for any prior attempts to access kernel memory regions outside normal permissions.
Typical attack path
- Identify and exploit a separate vulnerability to compromise a privileged process
- From the privileged context, trigger the kernel flaw in ION, Binder, USB or networking subsystems
- Read memory or kernel structures containing data belonging to other applications or users
- Exfiltrate the disclosed information to attacker-controlled infrastructure
How to detect it
Search system and kernel logs for unusual access attempts to ION, Binder, USB or networking interfaces from non-privileged contexts; look for processes that suddenly read large amounts of memory belonging to other users after privilege escalation.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize patching the affected kernel components on all Android devices and the listed Ubuntu systems
- Review and harden privileged processes that could serve as the initial foothold
- Monitor EPSS trend for any future increase indicating rising exploit interest
The record
An information disclosure vulnerability in kernel components including the ION subsystem, Binder, USB driver and networking subsystem could enable a local malicious application to access data outside of its permission levels. This issue is rated as Moderate because it first requires compromising a privileged process. Product: Android. Versions: Kernel-3.10, Kernel-3.18. Android ID: A-31651010.
