What it actually does

Buffer overflow in the parse_line function of BlueZ userland utilities allows arbitrary code execution with local privileges.

Why it matters to the business

Attackers with local access could gain full control of affected systems, leading to data theft or persistent compromise; though the issue is old with low exploitation probability, organizations using the impacted litefs packages should treat upgrades as a priority to avoid operational disruption.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker with local access supplies crafted input to BlueZ utilities invoking parse_line, triggering the overflow to inject and execute arbitrary code.

How to fix it

Upgrade litefs (Chainguard) and litefs (Wolfi) to version 0.5.11-r6 or later, which incorporates fixes for BlueZ 5.41 and earlier.

How to confirm the fix worked

Verify installed package versions against 0.5.11-r6, confirm BlueZ utilities are newer than 5.41, and test that parse_line handling no longer accepts oversized input.

Typical attack path

  1. Gain local access to a target system running affected BlueZ components
  2. Locate userland utilities that call the vulnerable parse_line function
  3. Craft and supply malicious input to trigger the buffer overflow
  4. Execute arbitrary code to escalate privileges or establish persistence

How to detect it

Search system logs and process audit trails for crashes or unexpected behavior in BlueZ utilities; monitor for local privilege-escalation attempts involving userland Bluetooth tools.

What your security team should do

  • Apply the specified package upgrades across all environments without delay
  • Review local access controls and limit untrusted user execution of BlueZ utilities
  • Incorporate BlueZ version checks into regular vulnerability scanning

The record

Buffer overflow in BlueZ 5.41 and earlier allows an attacker to execute arbitrary code via the parse_line function used in some userland utilities.
