What it actually does

The unformat_24bit_color function in format parsing code allows remote attackers to trigger heap corruption and process crash via an incomplete 24bit color code when true-color support is compiled in.

Why it matters to the business

Attackers can remotely crash affected chat clients, causing service outages and loss of availability for users relying on the software for communication.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker connects to a vulnerable instance and sends a crafted message containing an incomplete 24bit color escape sequence that triggers the flawed parsing path leading to heap corruption and denial of service.

How to fix it

Upgrade to a fixed version such as golang (Bitnami) 1.15.9 or apply the corresponding vendor patch for the affected package.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the installed version is at or above the fixed release, recompile without true-color if needed, and test parsing of color codes to ensure crashes no longer occur.

Typical attack path

  1. Identify a target running the vulnerable version with true-color enabled
  2. Establish a connection to the chat service
  3. Transmit a network message embedding an incomplete 24bit color code
  4. Trigger the format parsing code to induce heap corruption and crash

How to detect it

Review application logs and crash dumps for heap corruption signatures around color parsing routines; check network traffic for unusual color escape sequences in messages.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize upgrade to the fixed version listed for the affected package
  • Disable true-color compilation flag until patched if immediate upgrade is not feasible
  • Monitor for crash reports or availability alerts related to the chat client

The record

The unformat_24bit_color function in the format parsing code in Irssi before 0.8.20, when compiled with true-color enabled, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (heap corruption and crash) via an incomplete 24bit color code.
