What it actually does

Improper handling of decoder stack overflows in ber-decoder.c allows crafted BER input to trigger an abort in the Libksba parsing logic.

Why it matters to the business

Applications relying on the vulnerable library can be forced offline, causing service interruptions until the component is updated or restarted; the issue affects downstream packages such as certain Bitnami WordPress multisite deployments.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker crafts malicious BER-encoded data and supplies it to any network-facing service that uses Libksba for parsing; the malformed input overflows the decoder stack, forcing the process to abort and denying service to legitimate users.

How to fix it

Upgrade Libksba to version 1.3.3 or later; for the affected Bitnami package, update wordpress-multisite to 0.6.6 or newer which bundles the corrected library.

How to confirm the fix worked

Verify the installed Libksba version is at least 1.3.3; confirm the Bitnami component reports version 0.6.6 or higher; test with known-good BER data to ensure normal operation without aborts.

Typical attack path

  1. Identify a service or endpoint that processes untrusted BER data with Libksba
  2. Generate or obtain crafted BER input designed to overflow the decoder stack
  3. Transmit the payload over the network to the target service
  4. Observe process termination or service unavailability confirming the abort

How to detect it

Search process and application logs for unexpected terminations or abort messages immediately after receipt of BER-encoded content; correlate with network traffic containing unusual BER structures.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize upgrade of Libksba and dependent packages within the next maintenance window
  • Review inventory of all products that embed or link against Libksba
  • Monitor for any newly published exploits given the public disclosure age

The record

ber-decoder.c in Libksba before 1.3.3 does not properly handle decoder stack overflows, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (abort) via crafted BER data.
