What it actually does

The flaw allows a remote attacker to supply a specially crafted JSON file that triggers unbounded recursion in jv_dump_term, exhausting the call stack and crashing the process.

Why it matters to the business

Attackers can remotely interrupt availability of any service that processes untrusted JSON through the affected component, causing unplanned outages and potential loss of service for users and downstream systems.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker crafts a deeply nested or recursive JSON structure, delivers it over the network to any endpoint that invokes the vulnerable parsing path, and triggers the crash without authentication or user interaction.

How to fix it

Upgrade odoo (Bitnami) to version 15.0.0 or later; if jq is used directly ensure version 1.6_rc1-r0 or newer is installed and rebuild any dependent packages.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the installed version of the affected component meets or exceeds the fixed release; test with a known-recursive JSON sample in a non-production environment to verify the process no longer crashes.

Typical attack path

  1. Identify a network-reachable service that accepts JSON input and uses the vulnerable component
  2. Generate a malicious JSON payload designed to cause excessive recursion
  3. Transmit the payload to the service
  4. Observe process termination and service unavailability

How to detect it

Review application and system logs for unexpected process terminations or segmentation faults occurring immediately after JSON ingestion; correlate with web or API access logs showing large or deeply nested JSON payloads from external sources.

What your security team should do

  • Apply the vendor upgrade to 15.0.0 immediately on all Bitnami odoo deployments
  • Add JSON schema validation or size limits at ingress points until patches are deployed
  • Monitor for repeated service restarts or crashes on JSON-processing hosts

The record

The jv_dump_term function in jq 1.5 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (stack consumption and application crash) via a crafted JSON file. This issue has been fixed in jq 1.6_rc1-r0.
