What it actually does

Heap-based buffer overflow in GIF processing code triggered by an invalid background color index value in a crafted GIF file, leading to memory corruption and application crash.

Why it matters to the business

Processing of user-supplied or external image files can cause unexpected application downtime and service interruptions, though the flaw is old with low observed exploitation activity.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker creates a specially malformed GIF containing an out-of-range background color index and causes a vulnerable application to parse the file, triggering the overflow during color table handling.

How to fix it

Upgrade affected products to versions containing the fix, such as odoo (Bitnami) 15.0.0 or later releases that incorporate a corrected GIF library.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the installed version of the application or underlying GIF library is at or above the fixed release; attempt to process known-malformed test GIF files and verify no crash occurs.

Typical attack path

  1. Generate a malicious GIF file that sets an invalid background color index
  2. Supply the file to the target application through upload, import, or automated processing
  3. Force the application to invoke the vulnerable GIF parsing routine
  4. Trigger memory corruption resulting in denial of service

How to detect it

Search application and system logs for repeated crashes or segmentation faults occurring during GIF image parsing or conversion routines.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize upgrade to the fixed product version to remove the vulnerable code
  • Restrict untrusted GIF file processing until patches are applied
  • Review image-handling code paths for additional hardening opportunities

The record

Heap-based buffer overflow in util/gif2rgb.c in gif2rgb in giflib 5.1.2 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via the background color index in a GIF file.
