What it actually does
The flaw permits remote code execution when ImageMagick processes specially crafted image files containing shell metacharacters in supported coder formats such as MVG, MSL, or TEXT, allowing arbitrary command invocation during image handling.
Why it matters to the business
Attackers can gain full control of systems that process untrusted images, leading to data theft, ransomware deployment, or service disruption; organizations must complete remediation by the CISA deadline of 2024-09-30 to avoid mandatory reporting and potential regulatory consequences.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker supplies a malicious image file embedding shell metacharacters via one of the vulnerable coders; when the target application uses ImageMagick to parse or convert the image, the embedded commands execute with the privileges of the ImageMagick process, enabling full system compromise.
How to fix it
Upgrade ImageMagick to version 6.9.3-10 or 7.0.1-1 or later; for kubernetes-dns-node-cache (Chainguard) and kubernetes-dns-node-cache (Wolfi) update to 1.23.0-r1; disable unnecessary coders in policy.xml and apply strict input validation or sandboxing around image processing.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the installed ImageMagick version meets or exceeds the fixed releases, review policy.xml to ensure vulnerable coders are disabled, and test with known proof-of-concept images to verify that metacharacter injection no longer results in command execution.
Typical attack path
- Identify a target application or service that accepts and processes user-supplied images using ImageMagick
- Craft a malicious image file containing shell metacharacters in an affected coder format
- Deliver the image via upload, email attachment, or network request
- Trigger image processing to execute embedded commands
- Establish persistence or exfiltrate data from the compromised host
How to detect it
Search application and system logs for ImageMagick processes spawning unexpected child shells or commands; inspect web-server access logs for image upload requests followed immediately by anomalous process creation; review file-creation timestamps on systems that handle images for unexpected scripts or binaries.
What your security team should do
- Immediately inventory all systems using ImageMagick and schedule upgrades before the 2024-09-30 KEV deadline
- Apply least-privilege execution contexts and container isolation for image-processing workloads
- Implement network and application-layer controls to block untrusted image uploads until patches are deployed
- Monitor threat intelligence feeds for continued exploitation of this actively exploited vulnerability
The record
The (1) EPHEMERAL, (2) HTTPS, (3) MVG, (4) MSL, (5) TEXT, (6) SHOW, (7) WIN, and (8) PLT coders in ImageMagick before 6.9.3-10 and 7.x before 7.0.1-1 allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via shell metacharacters in a crafted image, aka "ImageTragick."
