What it actually does
The aufs module fails to properly restrict mount namespaces, allowing a local user to mount an aufs filesystem over a FUSE filesystem and execute a crafted setuid program to obtain elevated privileges.
Why it matters to the business
Local attackers can obtain root access on affected Linux systems, enabling full system compromise, data exfiltration, or installation of persistent malware. The issue impacts organizations running Linux kernels 3.x or 4.x with the aufs module enabled.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with a local shell creates a FUSE filesystem, mounts an aufs overlay on top of it inside a crafted mount namespace, and runs a setuid binary engineered to trigger the namespace bypass and escalate to root. No named threat actors or ransomware campaigns are associated with this CVE.
How to fix it
Upgrade the Linux kernel to a patched release that enforces proper mount namespace restrictions for aufs. Disable the aufs kernel module if the functionality is not required.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the running kernel is newer than the vulnerable 3.x/4.x series and that aufs mount operations no longer permit the namespace bypass. Verify that the aufs module is either removed or compiled out of the kernel.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local unprivileged shell on target host
- Prepare a FUSE-backed filesystem
- Mount an aufs layer atop the FUSE mount within a new namespace
- Execute a crafted setuid binary that exploits the namespace handling flaw
- Escalate to root privileges
How to detect it
Review system logs for unexpected aufs or FUSE mount activity and for setuid binaries executed from non-standard namespaces. No specific threat-actor indicators or ransomware IOCs are known for this CVE.
What your security team should do
- Apply current kernel updates across all affected Linux systems as soon as possible
- Disable the aufs module on systems where it is not explicitly needed
- Review kernel configurations and remove unnecessary filesystem modules
The record
The aufs module for the Linux kernel 3.x and 4.x does not properly restrict the mount namespace, which allows local users to gain privileges by mounting an aufs filesystem on top of a FUSE filesystem, and then executing a crafted setuid program.
