What it actually does

The ContainerNode::parserRemoveChild function in Blink mishandles widget updates during DOM parsing, allowing crafted content to violate Same Origin Policy checks and access cross-origin resources.

Why it matters to the business

Attackers could steal sensitive data such as credentials or session tokens from other websites visited by users, resulting in account compromise and erosion of trust in web applications.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker hosts a malicious site that loads a specially crafted page exploiting the DOM parsing flaw; when a victim visits, the browser incorrectly permits cross-origin access, enabling data exfiltration without user interaction beyond page load.

How to fix it

Upgrade Google Chrome to version 49.0.2623.75 or later; apply vendor security updates promptly across all managed endpoints and disable outdated browser instances.

How to confirm the fix worked

Verify installed Chrome version meets or exceeds 49.0.2623.75; test affected DOM scenarios with known proof-of-concept pages or review Blink source changes for the parser widget handling fix.

Typical attack path

  1. Host a malicious website containing crafted widget and parser content
  2. Lure a victim to visit the attacker-controlled page
  3. Trigger parserRemoveChild during page rendering to bypass SOP enforcement
  4. Read or manipulate cross-origin resources and exfiltrate data

How to detect it

Review browser process logs and proxy records for unusual cross-origin fetches; examine web server access logs for patterns of crafted widget or parser requests from client browsers.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize immediate rollout of Chrome 49.0.2623.75 or newer to all users
  • Enforce enterprise browser policies to prevent use of unsupported versions
  • Monitor network logs for anomalous cross-origin requests originating from browser processes

The record

The ContainerNode::parserRemoveChild function in WebKit/Source/core/dom/ContainerNode.cpp in Blink, as used in Google Chrome before 49.0.2623.75, mishandles widget updates, which makes it easier for remote attackers to bypass the Same Origin Policy via a crafted web site.
