What it actually does
The flaw permits a process inside an LXC container, when attached via lxc-attach, to inject characters into the host terminal input buffer using the TIOCSTI ioctl, allowing escape from the container namespace into the parent session.
Why it matters to the business
Attackers who gain a foothold inside a container can break out to the host system, potentially compromising all other containers and the underlying infrastructure, leading to data breaches or full environment takeover.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker first obtains execution inside a container, runs lxc-attach to attach to another container or the host session, then uses the TIOCSTI ioctl to push crafted input into the terminal buffer, executing commands outside the container boundaries.
How to fix it
Upgrade LXC to a version containing commit e986ea3dfa4a2957f71ae9bfaed406dd6e1ffff6 or later; rebuild and redeploy containers with the patched LXC binaries; restrict use of lxc-attach to trusted administrative contexts where possible.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify the running lxc binary or source tree contains commit e986ea3dfa4a2957f71ae9bfaed406dd6e1ffff6; attempt to reproduce the TIOCSTI escape from a test container and confirm the ioctl is now blocked or sanitized.
Typical attack path
- Obtain code execution inside a container (via application vulnerability or misconfiguration)
- Invoke lxc-attach to connect to a target session
- Call TIOCSTI ioctl repeatedly to inject shell commands or escape sequences into the parent terminal
- Execute arbitrary commands on the host or in other containers
How to detect it
Review host audit logs and terminal session records for unexpected ioctl calls or TIOCSTI usage originating from container processes; examine process trees and command history for lxc-attach invocations followed by anomalous host-level activity.
What your security team should do
- Immediately upgrade all LXC installations to the fixed commit or a subsequent release
- Audit environments for any use of lxc-attach and limit its privileges
- Implement additional container isolation controls such as user namespaces and seccomp filters
- Monitor for container escape attempts in host audit logs and process activity
The record
An issue was discovered in Linux Containers (LXC) before 2016-02-22. When executing a program via lxc-attach, the nonpriv session can escape to the parent session by using the TIOCSTI ioctl to push characters into the terminal's input buffer, allowing an attacker to escape the container.
