What it actually does
Integer overflow in the VNC display driver triggers an infinite loop when processing a crafted CLIENT_CUT_TEXT message, crashing the QEMU process.
Why it matters to the business
Virtual machines or hosts using the affected QEMU VNC implementation can be forced offline, interrupting workloads and requiring manual restarts until the component is updated.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with network access to an exposed VNC port establishes a session and sends a specially crafted CLIENT_CUT_TEXT message that exploits the integer overflow, causing the QEMU process to enter an infinite loop and terminate.
How to fix it
Upgrade QEMU to version 2.1.0 or later on all affected systems; apply vendor patches for Fedora, Ubuntu, SUSE Linux Enterprise products, and Arista EOS where available.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the installed QEMU binary reports version 2.1.0 or newer; test VNC connectivity with non-malicious CLIENT_CUT_TEXT traffic and verify the process remains stable.
Typical attack path
- Identify QEMU instances exposing VNC on accessible network ports
- Connect to the VNC service and authenticate if required
- Transmit a malicious CLIENT_CUT_TEXT message containing values that trigger the integer overflow
- Observe the resulting infinite loop and process crash
How to detect it
Review VNC server logs and QEMU process crash reports for repeated CLIENT_CUT_TEXT messages followed by abrupt termination; correlate with network flow data showing unusual VNC session lengths.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize patching QEMU installations that expose VNC to untrusted networks
- Restrict VNC access to trusted management networks or require strong authentication and VPN
- Monitor for QEMU process crashes in virtualization hosts and correlate with VNC traffic logs
The record
Integer overflow in the VNC display driver in QEMU before 2.1.0 allows attachers to cause a denial of service (process crash) via a CLIENT_CUT_TEXT message, which triggers an infinite loop.
