What it actually does
Heap-based buffer overflow in WriteProlog within texttopdf that allows remote attackers to crash the process or execute arbitrary code by supplying a print job containing a small line size.
Why it matters to the business
Print servers may experience unexpected crashes or full system compromise, leading to disrupted printing services, potential data exposure, and the need for emergency incident response on legacy systems still running unpatched versions.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker prepares a specially crafted print job that triggers the overflow condition and submits it over the network to a vulnerable cups-filters installation; successful exploitation can result in denial of service or remote code execution without authentication.
How to fix it
Upgrade tiff packages on affected Debian and Ubuntu releases to the listed fixed versions (Debian 11/12/13: 4.0.6-3; Ubuntu 14.04 LTS: 4.0.3-7ubuntu0.9; Ubuntu 16.04 LTS: 4.0.6-1ubuntu0.4) and restart affected print services. Remove or isolate any remaining systems running cups-filters before 1.0.70.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm installed package versions match or exceed the fixed releases, reprocess sample print jobs containing varied line sizes, and verify that texttopdf no longer crashes under those conditions.
Typical attack path
- Locate exposed print services accepting jobs from untrusted sources
- Craft a print job containing an abnormally small line size
- Submit the job to the texttopdf filter
- Trigger heap corruption leading to crash or code execution
How to detect it
Search print service and cups error logs for repeated texttopdf crashes or segmentation faults correlated with incoming jobs; examine any preserved job files for unusually small line-size directives.
What your security team should do
- Apply the listed package updates immediately on any remaining internet-facing or multi-tenant print infrastructure
- Disable network printing from untrusted networks until patches are deployed
- Review print job logs for anomalous small-line-size submissions over the past 30 days
- Plan decommissioning of end-of-life distributions still listed as affected
The record
Heap-based buffer overflow in the WriteProlog function in filter/texttopdf.c in texttopdf in cups-filters before 1.0.70 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via a small line size in a print job.
