Schedule a fix SSVC: Track

A local user on older Linux systems could trick a system tool into writing files anywhere on the computer, potentially letting them take full control.

What it actually does

Local process can invoke fusermount without sanitized environment, allowing a crafted LIBMOUNT_MTAB variable to be passed to mount/umount running as root and resulting in arbitrary file writes via the mount debugging code path.

Why it matters to the business

Local attackers on affected systems can modify arbitrary files, which may be used to escalate privileges, alter system configuration, or disrupt services; the vulnerability has been public for over eleven years with an exploit available but low observed exploitation rates.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker with a local shell sets the LIBMOUNT_MTAB environment variable to a path under their control, then executes fusermount (or an application that triggers it); the unsanitized variable reaches the mount binary running as root, whose debug feature writes attacker-controlled content into the chosen file.

How to fix it

Upgrade the FUSE package to a version that clears the environment before calling mount/umount; on the listed distributions install the following fixed package versions: Debian 11/12/13/14 install 2.11.0-1, Ubuntu 14.04 LTS install 1:2.10.9-0ubuntu3.3, Ubuntu 16.04 LTS install 1:2.10.12-0ubuntu5.1.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the installed FUSE or dependent package version meets or exceeds the fixed releases above; attempt to run fusermount with a test LIBMOUNT_MTAB value and verify the variable is no longer inherited by the mount process.

Typical attack path

  1. Obtain local shell access on a system running an affected FUSE package
  2. Craft and export LIBMOUNT_MTAB pointing to a target file writable only by root
  3. Invoke fusermount (directly or via dependent application) to trigger mount as root
  4. Use resulting file write to plant a payload or modify authentication files for privilege escalation

How to detect it

Review historical authentication and process execution logs for invocations of fusermount or mount by non-root users; inspect for processes that set unusual LIBMOUNT_MTAB values or unexpected file modifications in system directories around the time of those executions.

What your security team should do

  • Apply the listed fixed package versions immediately on all affected Debian and Ubuntu systems
  • Audit local user accounts and remove unnecessary shell access to reduce attack surface
  • Monitor package update channels for any backported fixes in older distributions still in use

The record

fusermount in FUSE before 2.9.3-15 does not properly clear the environment before invoking (1) mount or (2) umount as root, which allows local users to write to arbitrary files via a crafted LIBMOUNT_MTAB environment variable that is used by mount's debugging feature.
