What it actually does
Remote attackers can trigger an assertion failure or daemon crash in BIND when DNSSEC validation and managed-keys are enabled by forcing an invalid trust-anchor state with no usable key.
Why it matters to the business
DNS resolution services can be taken offline, causing widespread network and application outages; the issue affects packaged deployments such as vault (Bitnami) and has remained exploitable for over a decade with stable but non-negligible exploit probability.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker sends specially crafted DNS messages that exploit the managed-keys trust-anchor handling in a vulnerable BIND instance running with DNSSEC validation enabled, resulting in an immediate assertion failure and process termination.
How to fix it
Upgrade vault (Bitnami) to version 1.10.11 or later; if immediate upgrade is not possible, disable managed-keys or DNSSEC validation until the fix can be applied.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the installed package version matches or exceeds the fixed release; review BIND startup configuration and logs to verify managed-keys and DNSSEC settings no longer trigger the vulnerable code path.
Typical attack path
- Scan for exposed BIND servers with DNSSEC and managed-keys enabled
- Craft DNS queries or responses that induce an invalid trust-anchor scenario
- Deliver the malicious traffic to the target resolver
- Trigger assertion failure leading to daemon exit or crash
How to detect it
Search DNS server logs for assertion failures mentioning trust-anchor or managed-keys management; monitor for abrupt named daemon restarts or crashes coinciding with inbound DNS traffic.
- assertion failure.*managed-keys
- trust-anchor management scenario
- named.*daemon exit
- no key is ready for use
What your security team should do
- Apply the vendor-supplied update to vault (Bitnami) 1.10.11 without delay
- Audit all DNS infrastructure for use of managed-keys with DNSSEC
- Implement network segmentation and rate limiting around resolvers
- Add monitoring for unexpected named process restarts
The record
named in ISC BIND 9.7.0 through 9.9.6 before 9.9.6-P2 and 9.10.x before 9.10.1-P2, when DNSSEC validation and the managed-keys feature are enabled, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (assertion failure and daemon exit, or daemon crash) by triggering an incorrect trust-anchor management scenario in which no key is ready for use.
