What it actually does

The vulnerability in python-dbusmock before 0.15.1 allows the AddTemplate() D-Bus method or DBusTestCase.spawn_server_template() method to be tricked into loading and executing arbitrary malicious .pyc files supplied by an attacker, resulting in remote code execution.

Why it matters to the business

Successful exploitation could allow attackers to run arbitrary code on affected systems such as those running virtualbox on Ubuntu 20.04, potentially leading to full system compromise, though low EPSS and lack of KEV status indicate limited real-world impact despite the high CVSS score.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker prepares a malicious .pyc file and supplies it to the vulnerable AddTemplate() D-Bus method call or DBusTestCase.spawn_server_template() method in python-dbusmock, causing the application to execute the attacker-controlled code instead of legitimate templates.

How to fix it

Upgrade python-dbusmock to version 0.15.1 or newer. For virtualbox on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS, upgrade to version 6.1.2-dfsg-1.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the installed version of python-dbusmock or virtualbox matches or exceeds the fixed versions listed, and verify that the affected methods reject or safely handle .pyc file inputs without execution.

Typical attack path

  1. Locate a target system using a vulnerable version of python-dbusmock
  2. Craft a malicious .pyc file containing attacker code
  3. Invoke the AddTemplate() D-Bus method or spawn_server_template() with the malicious file path
  4. Trigger execution of the supplied .pyc to achieve code execution

How to detect it

Review application and system logs for unexpected python or dbusmock process spawns, unusual .pyc file loads via D-Bus calls, or template-related errors that coincide with external inputs.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize patching affected virtualbox packages to 6.1.2-dfsg-1 on Ubuntu 20.04 systems
  • Audit D-Bus method invocations involving template loading for unexpected inputs
  • Monitor EPSS trends and re-evaluate if exploit maturity increases

The record

python-dbusmock before version 0.15.1 AddTemplate() D-Bus method call or DBusTestCase.spawn_server_template() method could be tricked into executing malicious code if an attacker supplies a .pyc file.
