What it actually does
The simulate dbus method in aptdaemon permits local users to bypass permission checks and retrieve sensitive information or access files using root privileges.
Why it matters to the business
Attackers with local access on affected Ubuntu systems can read confidential data or obtain elevated file system access, increasing risk of data exposure or further compromise on servers and workstations.
How an attack unfolds
A local attacker invokes the simulate dbus method on a vulnerable aptdaemon instance to perform unauthorized file operations or information queries under root context without proper authentication.
How to fix it
Upgrade aptdaemon to the corrected package versions for each Ubuntu release: 1.1.1+bzr982-0ubuntu3.1 on 15.04, 1.1.1+bzr980-0ubuntu1.1 on 14.10, 1.1.1-1ubuntu5.2 on 14.04 LTS, and 0.43+bzr805-0ubuntu10 on 12.04 LTS.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify the installed aptdaemon package version matches or exceeds the listed fixed releases for the running Ubuntu distribution and confirm the simulate dbus method no longer permits unauthorized access in testing.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local user access on a vulnerable Ubuntu system
- Interact with the system D-Bus to invoke the simulate method in aptdaemon
- Request access to restricted files or sensitive configuration data
- Exfiltrate obtained information or leverage for further local actions
How to detect it
Examine D-Bus logs and system audit trails for invocations of the simulate method by aptdaemon, unusual root-owned file reads initiated through the service, or unexpected information disclosure events.
What your security team should do
- Apply the appropriate aptdaemon package updates across all Ubuntu systems
- Audit local user accounts and dbus permissions to reduce unnecessary exposure
- Review system logs for historical dbus activity involving aptdaemon simulate calls
The record
The simulate dbus method in aptdaemon before 1.1.1+bzr982-0ubuntu3.1 as packaged in Ubuntu 15.04, before 1.1.1+bzr980-0ubuntu1.1 as packaged in Ubuntu 14.10, before 1.1.1-1ubuntu5.2 as packaged in Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, before 0.43+bzr805-0ubuntu10 as packaged in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS allows local users to obtain sensitive information, or access files with root permissions.
