What it actually does
Improper handling of IPC interactions between the Gamepad API and Google V8 engine results in memory corruption that permits remote arbitrary code execution.
Why it matters to the business
Older browser installations can be silently compromised, allowing attackers to run unauthorized code on end-user systems with potential data theft or further network access.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker hosts malicious web content that leverages the Gamepad API through IPC channels to trigger a flaw in V8, resulting in memory corruption and arbitrary code execution on the victim's browser.
How to fix it
Upgrade affected Chrome installations to version 41.0.2272.118 or later; for listed Alpine libxml2 packages apply the fixed version 2.9.4-r1 immediately.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify browser or package version strings match or exceed the fixed releases and confirm absence of the vulnerable IPC/Gamepad/V8 code paths via source inspection or updated build manifests.
Typical attack path
- Host or compromise a website delivering malicious JavaScript
- Trigger Gamepad API calls that interact with IPC and V8
- Exploit resulting memory corruption to execute attacker-controlled code
How to detect it
Review web proxy and browser process logs for unexpected Gamepad API invocations combined with IPC activity; examine crash reports containing V8 memory corruption signatures.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize immediate upgrade of all Chrome instances to the fixed release due to remote code execution risk
- Scan enterprise endpoints for outdated browser versions and enforce auto-update policies
- Monitor EPSS and exploit maturity indicators for any future increase in observed activity
The record
Google Chrome before 41.0.2272.118 does not properly handle the interaction of IPC, the Gamepad API, and Google V8, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via unspecified vectors.
