Schedule a fix SSVC: Track

A flaw in a widely used graphics library can let attackers crash programs or take over computers by sending specially crafted images, so organizations should update the library everywhere it is used.

What it actually does

Integer overflow in create_bits allows allocation of undersized buffers when processing large height and stride values, leading to out-of-bounds writes or reads that crash the application or permit arbitrary code execution.

Why it matters to the business

Systems performing image or graphics processing on Ubuntu or other distributions using the vulnerable Pixman library may experience crashes or full host compromise, disrupting services and requiring emergency patching across many installations.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker supplies a malicious image or rendering request containing oversized height and stride parameters to the create_bits function; the resulting integer overflow produces an undersized buffer that is subsequently written to, enabling denial of service or remote code execution.

How to fix it

Upgrade Pixman to version 0.32.6 or later on all affected systems; rebuild and redeploy any dependent packages such as those on Ubuntu that statically or dynamically link the library.

How to confirm the fix worked

Verify installed Pixman version is 0.32.6 or newer via package manager or library inspection; recompile test applications against the fixed library and confirm absence of crashes on previously triggering inputs.

Typical attack path

  1. Identify a target application or service that links against vulnerable Pixman
  2. Craft a malicious image or rendering input with large height and stride values
  3. Deliver the input via network, file, or API call to trigger the create_bits path
  4. Trigger the integer overflow and subsequent memory corruption to achieve crash or code execution

How to detect it

Review application logs for crashes originating from pixman-bits-image.c or create_bits; inspect core dumps or memory error reports indicating buffer overflows during image processing; correlate with inbound image or rendering requests from untrusted sources.

What your security team should do

  • Immediately inventory all systems using Pixman and schedule upgrade to 0.32.6
  • Prioritize patching of internet-facing or high-value graphics-processing hosts
  • Monitor upstream distribution updates for rebuilt dependent packages
  • Add Pixman version checks to vulnerability scanning and asset management processes

The record

Integer overflow in the create_bits function in pixman-bits-image.c in Pixman before 0.32.6 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via large height and stride values.
