What it actually does

NULL pointer dereference in xdr_status_vector triggered by op_response action containing a non-empty status vector, resulting in segmentation fault and process crash.

Why it matters to the business

Database service becomes unavailable, interrupting applications and queries that depend on it and causing operational downtime.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker connects to the exposed Firebird listener and transmits a single crafted op_response packet carrying a non-empty status vector; the server dereferences a null pointer and terminates.

How to fix it

Upgrade Firebird to version 2.1.7 or 2.5.3 SU1 (or later maintenance releases) on all affected systems; apply vendor or distribution patches for opensuse, debian, and ubuntu packages where available.

How to confirm the fix worked

Verify installed Firebird version is at or above the fixed releases; attempt controlled reproduction of the op_response packet against a non-production instance to confirm absence of crash.

Typical attack path

  1. Identify reachable Firebird TCP port (default 3050)
  2. Send a single malformed op_response packet with non-empty status
  3. Observe immediate segmentation fault and service termination

How to detect it

Inspect system and application logs for segmentation fault entries mentioning the firebird or fbserver process; correlate with inbound connections on database ports around the time of crashes.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize upgrade of all Firebird instances to fixed versions
  • Restrict inbound access to database ports to trusted hosts only
  • Enable process monitoring and automatic restart for the firebird service
  • Review network exposure of legacy database servers

The record

The xdr_status_vector function in Firebird before 2.1.7 and 2.5.x before 2.5.3 SU1 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference, segmentation fault, and crash) via an op_response action with a non-empty status.
