What it actually does
The flaw permits unbounded delegation chaining in DNS responses, allowing a remote attacker to force the named process to consume excessive memory until it crashes.
Why it matters to the business
Remote attackers can take DNS servers offline, causing widespread disruption to name resolution services and any applications or networks that rely on them; the issue has remained exploitable for over a decade with moderate EPSS probability.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker sends a specially crafted DNS query that triggers an arbitrarily long or infinite chain of referrals; the server follows each referral without limit, exhausting memory and terminating the named daemon.
How to fix it
Upgrade ISC BIND to a version that enforces delegation depth limits; apply all subsequent security updates from the vendor.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm running BIND version is newer than the affected ranges listed in the advisory; test resolution behavior against queries known to produce long referral chains and verify memory usage remains bounded.
Typical attack path
- Send crafted DNS query containing deep or cyclic delegation chain to target BIND server
- Server recursively follows referrals without depth limits
- Memory consumption grows until named process crashes or becomes unresponsive
How to detect it
Review named process logs and system logs for unexpected crashes or out-of-memory events; inspect DNS query traffic for unusually deep referral chains; correlate with high memory utilization on DNS servers.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize patching all exposed BIND instances to current supported releases
- Implement network-level controls to limit recursive query sources
- Monitor named process resource usage and restart policies
- Review DNS logging for anomalous referral patterns
The record
ISC BIND 9.0.x through 9.8.x, 9.9.0 through 9.9.6, and 9.10.0 through 9.10.1 does not limit delegation chaining, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory consumption and named crash) via a large or infinite number of referrals.
