What it actually does

Use-after-free condition in the unserializer triggered by duplicate keys in serialized object properties, enabling arbitrary code execution.

How an attack unfolds

Upgrade PHP to 5.4.36 or later, 5.5.20 or later, or 5.6.4 or later; disable unserialize on untrusted input where possible and apply input validation.

Verify installed PHP version against patched releases; test application endpoints with known-safe serialized data and monitor for crashes or unexpected behavior under crafted duplicate-key inputs.

Typical attack path

1. Identify an application endpoint accepting untrusted serialized data
2. Craft malicious serialized object with duplicate keys targeting process_nested_data
3. Transmit payload via HTTP request or other input channel
4. Trigger use-after-free to overwrite memory structures
5. Execute arbitrary code on the server

How to detect it

Review web server and application logs for unusual unserialize activity or crashes; search for requests containing serialized PHP object syntax with repeated property names; examine memory dumps or core files for signs of use-after-free exploitation if incidents occur.
