What it actually does
The scheduler component fails to properly validate inputs from authenticated users, permitting arbitrary code execution on the host running the scheduler.
Why it matters to the business
Compromised compute clusters can lead to unauthorized job execution, theft of research or production data, and disruption of large-scale batch workloads across affected deployments.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker who possesses valid credentials authenticates to the HTCondor scheduler and submits specially crafted input that bypasses validation checks, resulting in execution of attacker-controlled code within the scheduler process.
How to fix it
Upgrade all HTCondor installations to version 8.2.6 or later; restrict scheduler access to trusted users and networks until upgrades are complete.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify installed HTCondor version meets or exceeds 8.2.6; test that previously exploitable job submission patterns are rejected by the scheduler.
Typical attack path
- Obtain valid authentication credentials for an HTCondor pool
- Connect to the central manager or scheduler daemon
- Submit a job or command containing malformed input
- Trigger scheduler processing that executes the injected code
How to detect it
Review HTCondor scheduler and job submission logs for unexpected or malformed job entries; correlate with process execution anomalies on scheduler hosts.
What your security team should do
- Immediately upgrade to HTCondor 8.2.6 or newer across all deployments
- Audit and tighten authentication and network access to scheduler daemons
- Enable enhanced logging for job submissions and monitor for anomalies
The record
The scheduler in HTCondor before 8.2.6 allows remote authenticated users to execute arbitrary code.
