What it actually does

Unchecked return value from malloc during SUN-DES-1 authentication handling leads to NULL pointer dereference and immediate server crash on a crafted connection request.

Why it matters to the business

Remote attackers can trigger denial-of-service crashes against graphical login or desktop sessions, forcing restarts and interrupting user access until the server is restarted or patched.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker sends a malicious connection request that exercises the SUN-DES-1 authentication path; the server allocates memory without checking the result, dereferences NULL, and terminates.

How to fix it

Upgrade the X.Org Server to version 1.16.3 or later; disable SUN-DES-1 authentication if the upgrade cannot be applied immediately.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the running X server version is 1.16.3 or newer; attempt a benign connection request under SUN-DES-1 and verify the server remains stable.

Typical attack path

1. Craft and send a connection request targeting SUN-DES-1 authentication
2. Force the server into the vulnerable malloc path
3. Trigger NULL dereference causing immediate crash

How to detect it

Review X server logs and system crash reports for segmentation faults or NULL dereference entries that occur immediately after inbound connection attempts using legacy authentication methods.
