A flaw in an old email handling program lets attackers run their own commands on a computer simply by sending a specially crafted message, which could let them steal data or take over the machine.

What it actually does

The flaw permits command injection when mailx processes a specially crafted email address field, allowing execution of arbitrary operating system commands with the privileges of the mailx process.

Why it matters to the business

Attackers can gain unauthorized control over systems that use the affected mail client to handle incoming messages, potentially leading to data theft, service disruption, or use as a foothold for further attacks; the issue affects widely deployed enterprise Linux distributions and remains unpatched in listed fixed versions.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker sends an email containing a malicious address string that embeds shell metacharacters; when a user or automated process opens or parses the message with the vulnerable mailx, the embedded commands execute on the host.

How to fix it

Replace the vulnerable mailx implementation with a maintained alternative such as heirloom-mailx, s-nail, or modern mail clients; restrict mailx usage to trusted internal messages only; apply vendor patches if later made available for the listed Red Hat and Debian distributions.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the mailx binary version is newer than 8.1.2 or has been replaced; test by attempting to process a benign message containing shell metacharacters in the address field and verify no unexpected command execution occurs.

Typical attack path

  1. Identify targets that receive or process email with the vulnerable mailx client
  2. Craft an email message whose address field contains command injection syntax
  3. Deliver the message via standard SMTP or other transport
  4. Wait for the recipient or automated handler to invoke mailx on the message
  5. Execute arbitrary commands on the compromised system

How to detect it

Review mail server and system logs for invocations of mailx processing messages with unusual address fields; look for child processes spawned unexpectedly by mailx or shell activity immediately following email receipt.

What your security team should do

  • Inventory all systems using mailx and prioritize replacement on internet-facing or high-value hosts
  • Block or filter inbound email containing suspicious address patterns at the MTA level until migration is complete
  • Monitor for any new upstream fixes and update package lists accordingly

The record

BSD mailx 8.1.2 and earlier allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands via a crafted email address.
