What it actually does

Off-by-one error in snmpHandleUdp triggers a heap-based buffer overflow when processing a crafted UDP SNMP request on a configured SNMP port, enabling denial of service via crash or potential arbitrary code execution.

Why it matters to the business

Service disruption or full system compromise on exposed instances can halt operations, require emergency patching, and increase risk of follow-on attacks; the long-public nature and moderate EPSS indicate ongoing but not mass-exploitation pressure.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker sends a specially crafted SNMP UDP datagram to the listening port; the off-by-one write corrupts heap metadata, allowing control-flow hijacking or a crash depending on memory layout.

How to fix it

Upgrade affected packages to the fixed versions: nodetaint (Chainguard) 0.0.4-r11 or later and nodetaint (Wolfi) 0.0.4-r11 or later; disable SNMP if unused; apply network ACLs restricting SNMP access.

How to confirm the fix worked

Verify installed package versions match or exceed the listed fixed releases; confirm SNMP port is closed or filtered; re-test with benign SNMP queries to ensure service stability.

Typical attack path

  1. Identify hosts exposing an SNMP UDP port
  2. Craft and transmit a malicious SNMP request that overflows the buffer
  3. Trigger heap corruption to achieve code execution or denial of service

How to detect it

Review historical logs for SNMP daemon crashes or segmentation faults coinciding with inbound UDP traffic on the SNMP port; correlate with any anomalous process terminations around the time of the request.

What your security team should do

  • Apply the exact package upgrades immediately given the public exploit path and memory-corruption class
  • Restrict SNMP exposure via firewall rules to trusted sources only
  • Monitor for any remaining instances still running pre-0.0.4-r11 builds

The record

Off-by-one error in the snmpHandleUdp function in snmp_core.cc in Squid 2.x and 3.x, when an SNMP port is configured, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted UDP SNMP request, which triggers a heap-based buffer overflow.
